What is a HardiePlank?
HardiePlank also known as Hardie Board, is a fiber cement siding manufactured by James Hardie Building Products. It’s components are primarily made of cement mixed with ground sand, wood cellulose fiber, and other additives. They make other products too but the most common ones would be the horizontal lap siding (HardiePlank) and the vertical siding commonly referred to as the HardiePanel – both of which are made from the same materials.
It can be molded into a wide array of wood designs during manufacturing as well then painted over to resemble the natural beauty of wood stains. HardiePlanks come in different colors and it’s virtually impenetrable to any kind of damage brought upon by harsh weather or climate.
HOW STRONG IS A HARDIEPLANK?
Compared to other siding materials out there, HardiePlanks will almost always be sturdier and will retain their strength over a longer period of time. Some of its main strengths include being:
- Pest Resistant
- Weather Resistant
- Water Resistant
- Fire Resistant
- Long Lasting
Due to having strong materials compounded together, it’s really hard to find a more durable material out there especially when it comes to siding for a home. Clients who opt to go with HardiePlanks are sure to enjoy its long lasting looks too because the material is guaranteed to withstand all elements better than other materials and in fact they won’t really have a need to replace their siding again for a very long time.
WHAT ARE THE HARDIEPLANK DESIGNS THAT I CAN CHOOSE FROM?
The beauty of fiber cement based products is that they can mimic other siding materials. There are multiple options out there but the most common ones are the following:
- Wood Grain – this design mimics the traditional wood look including the texture and paint
- Stucco – is primarily geared for modern contemporary looks with its clean surface
- Tile – not as common as the previous two but these are sheet like tiles made of the same fiber cement based material
Your local hardware store might have different offerings but these are some of the most popular colors offered by the manufacturer.

It’s available with smooth finishes as well if you’re not into the texture wood grain design.
HOW TO MAINTAIN HARDIEPLANK
To start off, hardieplanks are very tough to begin with so there’s really no need for heavy maintenance. You only need to clean it once or twice with a garden hose and a nylon brush or any nonmetal bristles to brush off any debris from the siding. Do not power wash it because it might damage the material if the pressure is too strong. Fiber cement sidings rarely need to be repainted cause they hold their color for a pretty long time but you can do so if you wish.
HardiePlanks will also resist any damage caused by sudden changes in the weather like extreme heat in the summer, excessive rain, ice, or snow storms. You won’t have to worry about moisture getting into the house cause the material is impenetrable. Rotting and warping won’t be an issue as well.
Investment wise, this is a great choice as well cause fiber cement products have developed a very good reputation so houses with hardieplank sidings tend to have a higher resale value overall. Warranty ranges from 30 to 50 years too so you can have some peace of mind not only now, but also in the future.
HARDIEPLANK COMPARED TO OTHER SIDING MATERIALS (VINYL, WOOD, ETC)
It’s not a stretch to say that other materials don’t really come close to the quality of fiber cement based products. The only drawback would be the price, due to the harder manufacturing process and materials involved to procure the product, HardiePlank tends to be more expensive especially when compared to vinyl sidings which are essentially plastic ones. Here’s some points to consider:
- Eco-friendly Product – since its primarily made with natural products like wood cellulose and sand, they excel at being nice to the environment compared to plastic based vinyls
- Longevity & Durability – this isn’t even a comparison really, fiber cement is no question stronger and more durable than vinyls. Add to that their natural resistance to rotting, insect & pest infestations, woodpeckers, and of course harsh weather elements.
- Competitive Pricing – over the years hardieplank has been steadily nearing the price point of the vinyls and other sidings. It may still be a tad more expensive but if you weigh the cost to quality ratio, it’s a win-win for the fiber cement product.
